WELCOME TO BORDER LINERS

JUNE 2008 - A BUSY ORIENTEEERING MONTH.

NEVER A DULL MOMENT!

Emily Jackson (Year 5) and Alice McKillop (Year 6) Of Skelton School won their classes at last Saturday’s Cumbria Schools’ Orienteering Championships held on Penrith Beacon on Saturday, against impressive opposition from all over the County. Elliott Jackson and Jack Ellis provided good back-up for the Team Score Results.  The delightful woodland well-endowed with tracks and paths gave fast running and short winning times.

In a hectic season of local informal evening Orienteering races, there was a good turn-out of Border Liners at West Cumberland Orienteering Club’s Thursday league event at Great Mell Fell, Penrith last week where Mike Cumpstey turned in Liners’ best result, 18th on the Long course, with Clyde Mitchell and Raymond Wren close on his heels. The Club’s best short course results came from Phil Nichols, fifth, Dick Whitworth and Robin Stansfield.  Courses started from the summit of the Fell, but climb was still considerable and careful map-reading of the changes from open fell to wooded patches was needed to keep on course. Meanwhile, Border Liners’ Summer Parks Orienteering series got off to a good start at Ratlingate Scout Camp where Scotby Beavers and Hesket Cubs were out in force. Border Liners’ youngster John Wigham won the B Course and then came second on the C Course.  The Seniors’ All Controls sprint course, won by Liner Jonathan Brown, with thirty controls in 3 kilometres, demanded concentration, giving a challenging course in an easy area. The follow-up event at Talkin Tarn saw a good turn-out of Hesket Cubs again, with the Seniors running two or three circuits of the Tarn.  Richard Evans and Steve Birkinshaw were Senior course winners while young Christopher Brown won the Juniors’ A Course and Mike Cumpstey led the All Controls course.

Further afield Andrew and Judy Suddaby put up Border Liners’ best results at Harlequins Orienteering Club’s prestigious National event held at Brown Clee, Staffordshire, both sixth in their respective classes. The competition attracted a large, high-quality entry nation-wide, while nearer home, Lakeland Orienteering Club’s Cumbrian Galoppen event, run over an attractive Forestry area with one section of rough open fell at Millom Park Wood saw Andy Lewsley and David Mainwaring in the top ten on Blue.

Border Liners host this Sunday’s Orienteering Event at Watermillock Common, Ullswater on Sunday. Starts 10.30 – 12. All welcome. Details from http://www.borderliners.btik.com

SCOTTISH ORIENTEERING CHAMPIONSHIPS  Tullochroisk 24th/25th May 2008

Border Liners returned triumphant from the Scottish Orienteering Championships held at Tullochroisk on the northern slopes of Schiehallion near Pitlochry at the week-end with a double win for Stella Lewsley on W50 in the Individual races on Saturday and in the Relays on Sunday where Liners’ Veteran team of Stella with Judy and Paul Johnson led the Handicap Relay results, closely followed in by Liners’ second string of  Andy Lewsley, Clyde and Di Mitchell in second place. Louise Wilson was Liners’ other winner on  Saturday taking the Scottish Native W65 trophy with a narrow lead over club-mate Shirley Moss. Seven hundred runners enjoyed the well-contoured area, where the pleasant mix of woodland and open hillside gave good running without too much technical difficulty due to the many walls and fences aiding navigation.

STIRLING WEEK-END May 10th/11th 2008

Border Liners clocked up three Class Winners at Forth Valley Orienteers’ Scottish Orienteering League Event at Touch Estate near Stirling on Sunday, with Stella Lewsley leading a well-supported W50 field and Andrew Suddaby and Barbara Plant winning the Men’s and Women’s 70 classes, while a back-on-form Margo Pennell just failed to beat rival Angela Whitworth on W65.

Saturday’s Scottish Sprint-Orienteering Championships, run round Stirling   Old   Town near the Castle, attracted over a hundred runners to this fast-growing branch of the sport. All ran the same course of twenty-six controls over a straight-line distance of 3km through streets and pedestrian alleyways with one long leg across parkland for variation.

Paul Johnson was BL’s best performer, sixty-fifth overall, taking second place in the M55+ category, with wife Judy ninth in the W40+ class.

BIGLAND REGIONAL EVENT Sunday 27th April 2008

Chris Lates made a welcome return to Orienteering with a superb victory on M65L, three minutes clear of the second man, at Lakeland Orienteering Club’s regional event at Bigland near Ulverston.  Border Liners produced four winners in total with Louise Wilson taking W65L, four minutes clear of Club-mate Angela Whitworth in second place, Di Mitchell victorious in W60L and Gerry Wilson in M65S, in a high class entry of over six hundred runners. Run over top-quality deciduous woodland terrain, with considerable contour detail, the event provided some of the best Orienteering in England .

BRITISH CHAMPS CULBIN SCOTLAND

Sat and Sun 19th & 20th April 2008

Border Liner Andrew Suddaby of Rosley took the Champion’s title in the M70 class at the British Orienteering Championships run at Culbin Forest , near Inverness , satisfyingly beating his close rival from Manchester and continuing his unbroken line of victories for 2008.  Liners’ Relay Team of Stella Lewsley, Judy Johnson and Di Mitchell joined him on the podium with a pleasing third place in the Women’s 50+ class, all the sweeter after a mere fourth place at the Easter JK International, while Judy’s son Ollie Johnson, running for South Yorkshire, retained his Men’s Elite title for another year.

Single figure individual placings went to Andy Lewsley, running the M50 Short race due to injury, Stella Lewsley, unusually running her own W50 class, Shirley Moss, well ahead of her four club-mates on W65, Gerry Wilson and Barbara Plant.

Fifteen hundred competitors of all ages ran over highly technical terrain, of World Championship class, with intricate contours in forested sand-dunes, where speed and navigational skills were both fully tested and losing contact with the map cost a few competitors as much as an hour’s running time.

RESULTS:  W50L (59.07) 5 Stella Lewsley 1.03.38, 18 Judy Johnson 1.21.10.  M50S (49.39) 4 Andy Lewsley 57.07.  M55L (1.01.54) 23 Paul Johnson 1.28.44.  M60L (59.52) 67 Clyde Mitchell 1.59.42.  W60L (55.59) 20 Diana Mitchell 1.19.12.  M65L (51.00) 16 Dick Whitworth 1.18.37, 25 Richard Moss 1.29.41.  W65L (1.07.03) 6 Shirley Moss 1.15.17, 10 Angela Whitworth 1.28.16, 12 Louise Wilson 1.29.49, 19 Judy Suddaby 1.56.35.  M65S (58.31) 4 Gerald Wilson 1.19.45.  W70L (1.10.42) 4 Barbara Plant 1.18.03.  M70L 1 Andrew Suddaby 54.17.

HAMPSFELL REGIONAL EVENT 13th April 2008

Nearly thirty Liners made the trip to Hampsfell near Cartmell to run in South Ribble Orienteering Club’s Regional Event. .Run over mixed open and wooded limestone country, with many clints, grykes and pavements and with incredibly detailed terrain particularly in the wooded areas, where keeping an eye on the ground underfoot seriously detracted from keeping an eye on the map thus reducing running speeds considerably.  Shirley Moss joined Andy & Stella Lewsley, Gerry Wilson and the invincible Andrew Suddaby in the Winners’ List, leading a well-supported W65L class, three minutes ahead of Club mate Louise Wilson in third place. Karen Blackburn made a welcome appearance with a fifth place on W60L, while Andy Lewsley, Paul Johnson and Barbara Plant turned in third places.

MUNCASTER FELL Sun 6th April 2008

Gerry Wilson, Geoff Armer, Paul Johnson and Raymond Wren put up Border Liners’ best results at West Cumberland Orienteering Club’s Cumbrian Galoppen Orienteering Event at Muncaster Fell on Sunday, with Anita Evans, Linda Collison and Jenny Wren heading the Club’s Ladies’ results and Richard Evans and Louise Wilson only a couple of minutes adrift of their faster Club mates on Green. An undesirably short Green course tempted many to run up a colour and there was strong competition well down the field on Blue with Liners Dick Whitworth, Di Mitchell, Phil Nichols and Judy Johnson a mere five minutes apart. The races attracted over two hundred runners to this intricately-contoured open area, well-known to fell-runners but new to Orienteering and one well-planned return leg of nearly two kilometres between controls ensured excellent use of the long, narrow ridge.

COOMBS WOOD March 30th 2008

Mike Noblett of Kirkbride running for WCOC won the elite Brown Course at Border Liners’ Cumbrian Galoppen Orienteering event held at Coombs Wood Armathwaite on Sunday, with young Callum Plunkett turning in the best local Junior result, second on the Orange course, two minutes down on the winner. Best Liners’ results came from Stella Lewsley on Blue and young Elizabeth Morley on Yellow, with Mike Winn, Dickie Henderson and Mark Hawker leading the Club’s results on Light Green, Green and Brown and there was a pleasing turn-out of newcomers to the sport.

On an area new to Orienteering, Liner Andy Lewsley planned the longer courses along the contours to minimise height climb on the steep hillside adjoining the River Eden, providing a navigational challenge to maintain altitude as well as direction, while the Junior courses made good use of the path network.

JK INTERNATIONAL Easter Week-end

The Easter JK Festival near Guildford in Surrey attracted a dozen Border Liners, with Andrew Suddaby winning the M70 Trophy on his 70th birthday in an international class of over sixty runners in his age group. Liners’ other prize-winner was Dick Whitworth, 3rd on M65 Short and the Women’s Veteran Relay team narrowly missed out on third place after the reversal of a jury decision.
